LogoLoft Links of the Day: Dec. 10, 2009

Ho, ho, ho - two in a row! That's right - The Logo Loft is back for the second day in a row with some new Logo Loft Links of the Day:

We here at The Logo Loft often say that good design is where you find it - it doesn't just come in the form of a well-designed logo (although we are partial to those) or an eye-catching billboard. And in this entry we've found a guy who thinks the same as we do. Now, you come to this blog for links, and it is links that we at The Logo Loft live to provide. However, this particular recommendation is not on the Internet - yet. For now, you can only see it in the pages of an old-fashioned, honest-to-Gutenberg print publication: Men's Journal. It's a feature on Bryan Nesbitt, a designer who now serves as general manager of Cadillac. In it, he shares his favorite designs, which run the gamut from a hotel with rooms carved out of ice to a mountain bike to an ironing board. The feature is available in MJ's latest issue, on stands now, but should be up soon at their website. It's worth a look.

Anyone that lists horror movies, pizza and Halloween as influences on his work gets our attention here at The Logo Loft. Illustrator Richard Mia did just that in his profile at Communication Arts - and his work is none too shabby, either. A bold, expressionistic design mixed with an almost pale palette with dash of bold reds and blues thrown in - it's work that we here at The Logo Loft enjoy quite a bit. Check out the handful of samples included with CA's interview, then head over to Mia's own site for a bigger helping.

Two entries. Five links. That's not a bad ratio, we don't think. Thanks for joining us here at The Logo Loft for another round of links. Check back tomorrow - maybe? - for another set of Logo Loft Links of the day.

Logo Loft Links of the Day: 12/09/09

The Logo Loft proudly presents another installment of The Logo Loft's Links of the Day. In those few moments each day when they're not working tirelessly for our clients, the designers here at The Logo Loft can be found surfing the web, checking out the work, ideas and philosophies of other designers and agencies, all in a search for ways to improve their own craft. These are some of the things that recently caught their eyes:

Scott Belsky, founder and CEO of Behance, will be conducting a live chat on Thursday, Dec. 10, where he'll discuss the most effective ways to harness creativity and bring ideas to fruition. Registration and information is available here.

Designer Daily has a cool photo feature on designer beds, including the coolest sofa bed you'll ever see. We're thinking about ordering up a batch for the Logo Loft offices. Check 'em out here.

If your city is like most cities, they've got a set of Christmas lights they put in prominent areas each year. Giant wreaths hanging from telephone poles, snowmen waving from bridge arches, garland with lights running down power lines - that sort of thing. As you can no doubt imagine, they don't just run down to the local Wal-Mart each year and pick that stuff up - decorations in that size are a specialty item, designed to be durable and eye-catching on a larger scale. We thought it was cool when we stumbled across a site for one company that makes ginormous snowflakes, Santas-and-sleighs, and other such decorations: Holiday Designs. If you've got the cash, maybe you can compete with your city for most elaborate display with a visit there.

That's it for today - thanks for checking out The Logo Loft's Links of the Day. We've got work to do now, but check back with the Logo Loft later in the week for more cool stuff.

Logo Loft Links of the Day: 12/1/09

Welcome to December, and welcome to the first of this month's installments of The Logo Loft Links 0f the Day. We here at The Logo Loft hope to bring you lots of links this month in amongst all the shopping, decorating, and celebrating. Let's get started:

"Stop thinking and let your mind wander." That's the philosophy Larken Werner, partner and creative director of Wall-to-Wall Studios, espouses in a short interview at Communication Arts. It's a philosophy that's certainly no stranger to us here at The Logo Loft - oftentimes, we find the best way to solve a creative dilemma is to quit thinking about it for a while. Read, have a conversation, take a walk - do something to change your focus, and all the while your subconcious is still churning away on it, and usually has the answer ready when you sit down to face it again. At least, that's how it works for us.

Most of us this time of year have either already decorated for the holiays, or we're thinking about it. For the savvy decorator, there's more to Christmas decorations than putting up a tree and tossing some lights on the shrubbery outside. About.com has a nice collection of articles to help you put a little more thought into your yuletide trimmings, including color schemes (there's more to it than red and green!), wreath design and decoration, and making tradition a part of your decorating routine. It's a nice series of articles that prove that every design needs a little thought and purpose to help it truly stand out.

Did you know that the city of Manchester has a creative director? Neither did we. But they do, and in an effort to drive holiday shoppers to that city's centre shopping district, he's designed some one-of-a-kind wrapping paper that will be used there exclusively. You can see a photo of the designer, Peter Saville, along with his paper, here.

We've got more, but we better "wrap" it up for today. Ahem. Sorry. Join us later this week as The Logo Loft presents more Logo Loft Links of the Day.

The Logo Loft Links of the Day: 11/18/09

The Logo Loft continues scouring the Internet, searching high and low (and all the dusty corners in between) to find great design work and inspiration. Here’s a trio of the latest and greatest finds we’ve unearted – The Logo Loft Links of the Day.

Seattle-based Turnstyle is a graphic design firm that states its mission right on the front of its web page: “We use design as a tool to forge a strong emotional connection between your customers and your brand.” That’s a mindset that mirrors ours here at The Logo Loft – we, too, feel it’s our job to give your clients a connection to your business, something that keeps you front and center in their minds and brings them back to you again and again. Turnstyle has compiled a lengthy and impressive client list thanks to the clean, colorful, modern style that graces their work, including Amp’d Mobile, Washington Mutual, The Seattle Times, and Fat Bastard Wine. Take a look at their website for some truly inspiring work.

Typography Daily is one of those sites with an extremely narrow focus that might appeal to only a handful of people, but nonetheless has a solid home and following on the ‘Net. Basically, it’s a roundup/guide/blog dedicated to the world of typography. Seeing as how typography plays a huge role in the work we do at The Logo Loft, this is sure to make the bookmark list of many a designer roaming our hallowed halls. Take a look and see for yourself just how much more there is to putting a name in a logo than typing it out.

Over at Lifehacker’s “Featured Workspace” section, there’s a great example of how some ingenuity and a little know-how can take an item designed for a specific purpose and remake it so that it’s absolutely perfect for a completely different function. Click here for a peek at a geek’s reinterpretation of a rolling tool cart, used now as a mobile gaming/computing station so his wife doesn’t have to listen to him play “fake war” during his weekly game night. Great stuff, and proof that good design is adaptable for almost anything.

That about wraps it up for today’s Logo Loft links. Check back with The Logo Loft soon for another roundup.

Logo Loft Links of the Day: 11/13/09

The Logo Loft returns today with another roundup of inspirational design news and sites. Without further ado, here are the Logo Loft Link of the Day:

Lisel Jane is an illustrator who wears her influences – which include old National Geographic magazines, boats and found photos – proudly on her sleeve. Her work has a distinct old-timey feel mixed with a modern perspective, an aesthetic that has attracted clients including Spin magazine, Sony, Abercrombie & Fitch and the New York Times Magazine.

If there’s one thing we here at The Logo Loft love, it’s a good movie. If there’s one thing we love even more, it’s a cool movie poster. Designer Daily news has a rundown of 30 great vintage posters, including one sheets for Forbidden Planet, Metropolis, and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Not all of the movies are classics (Planet of the Vampires anyone?), but all of these posters are.

Finally, while we at The Logo Loft are mainly about the pictures, we appreciate the turn of a good phrase as much as the next person. Especially when phrases and letters are turned into works of art, such as these text art pieces at Tutorial9. Check ‘em out.

That’s it for today – check back soon for another roundup of great links from The Logo Loft.

The Logo Loft Links of the Day: November 4, 2009

The Logo Loft returns, stuffed with trick-or-treat candy and our famous “Zombie Punch,” for a brand-new whirl around design-oriented links on the Internet. Here, then, are the Logo Loft Links of the Day:

Australian designer Caroline Gilroy took a unique approach with her side project of designing wine labels. Combining her skills in typography with her observation that many wine names are often mispronounced, she came up with a design based on the phonetic spellings of the wine names. You can check out a gallery of the stark, striking designs at Communication Arts, and see more of her work at her website.

Little&Company is celebrating 30 years of creative excellence with “Thirty Conversations on Design.” The site poses two questions to thirty renowned creative professionals: “What single example of design inspires you most?” and “What problem should design solve next?” The answers are being posted 10 at a time, so bookmark the site and visit it often.

Designers and writers usually have huge libraries of books and magazines that inpire them in their daily design work. Some may have actual libraries to hold their valuable tomes; others take the idea of “the stacks” quite seriously, with stacks of books found on every flat surface and tucked into every corner. For some more creative solutions on how to house those books, check out Designer Daily’s photo feature on “Amazing Bookshelves.”

That’s it for today – check back with The Logo Loft soon for more Logo Loft Links of the Day.

The Logo Loft Daily Links: October 27, 2009

Welcome back to The Logo Loft's Daily Links, a somewhat-daily roundup of the best examples of design and creativity on the web. Here at The Logo Loft, we're constantly on the lookout for the latest examples, inspirations, and philosophies that drive the best creative minds out there - including our own. Here's where we share some of what we find with you.

First up is a short talk with New York-based designer Patrick Tobin, who runs a small design studio in Manhattan. Tobin talks briefly about his philosophy and approach to projects for clients ranging from the School of Visual Arts to Esprit. You can also see a bit more of his illustrations and designs at the online portfolio he maintains here.

Next up is something that we stumbled over just in time for Halloween - Extreme Pumpkins. Want to make your jack o' lantern stand out from the crowd this year? Then check out this site. You'll see creative ideas involving candy corn, nails, fake spiders and centipedes, fake blood - even fire - that will transform the most ho-hum pumpkin into a spectacle the neighbors won't forget (or, in some cases, forgive). If you're ready to be the most talked-about house on the block this Halloween, take some tips from this site, and take your pumkin to the extreme.

That's it for today's links from The Logo Loft. If you've got a site or a link you'd like us to share, leave a note in the comments and will take a look. In the meantime, join us here at The Logo Loft tomorrow for more links!
